In the fourth episode of the series, Renata Mielli and Paulo Rená discuss the regulation of social media platforms. They also discuss the context of drafting the Marco Civil da Internet and how to mitigate current problems.
Renata Mielli says: ‘This model of responsibility, whereby the neutral intermediary provider is only held responsible for third-party content after receiving a court order, has lost some of its meaning for social media platforms because they are no longer just neutral intermediaries.’
Paulo Rená: ‘If the platform is involved in the paid promotion of content, it can be required to take on an editorial role and assess whether that content is suitable for promotion.’

The experts appearing in this episode are: Renata Mielli, a journalist and coordinator of the Comitê Gestor da Internet; and Paulo Rená, a jurist and researcher at the Instituto de Referência em Internet e Sociedade.
Meet the experts:
Renata Mielli — journalist and PhD candidate at the Escola de Comunicação e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo, is the coordinator of the Comitê Gestor da Internet, in Brazil. She coordinated the Centro de Estudos da Mídia Alternativa Barão de Itararé from 2010 to 2023 and was a member of the Coalizão Direitos na Rede from 2016 to 2023.
Paulo Rená — jurist and PhD candidate in Law, State and Constitution at the Universidade de Brasília. He is also a researcher at the Instituto de Referência em Internet e Sociedade, as well as a member of Aqualtune LAB. He managed the collective drafting process for the Marco Civil da Internet at the Secretaria de Assuntos Legislativos do Ministério da Justiça (2009–10).
