Made up of textual, iconographic, sound and audiovisual documents, books and objects, the President Fernando Henrique Cardoso Collection includes the archives of Fernando Henrique Cardoso himself, anthropologist and former first lady Ruth Cardoso, and Joaquim Ignacio Baptista Cardoso and Leonidas Cardoso, Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s grandfather and father. Later, the archives of two ministers from his government were added: Paulo Renato Souza (Education) and Sergio Motta (Communications).
Portal do Acervo
The Portal do Acervo (Collection Portal) makes around 130,000 digitized documentary items available free of charge, described by metadata and keywords that make online searching easier. Most of the collection is textual, but there are photographs, videos and recordings, works of art and objects, as well as books authored by Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Ruth Cardoso and works collected by the couple throughout their lives. New items are added daily and there is always something new to consult.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso
The collection of documents in the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Archive (1931-) reflects the family environment in which the holder was brought up, the studies he undertook, the activities he developed, both academically (as a sociologist, researcher and university professor) and politically, as a senator, constituent senator, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance and President of the Republic.

The documents in the Ruth Cardoso Archive (1930-2008) evoke her activities as an anthropologist, university professor, first lady of the Republic and president, for eight years, of the ‘Comunidade Solidária’ Program Council, as well as portraying aspects of her social and family life.
Joaquim Ignacio Baptista Cardoso
The documents in the Joaquim Ignacio Baptista Cardoso Archive (1860-1924), FHC’s grandfather, bear witness to his participation in the proclamation of the Republic (1889) and other episodes in Brazilian history, such as the Revolta da Armada (1893-1894), the Revolução Federalista (1893-1895) and the Movimento Tenentista (1922-1924).
Leonidas Cardoso
The Leonidas Cardoso Archive (1889-1965) received its first sanitization treatment and the summary recognition of the documents accumulated by its owner when he was a federal deputy for the PTB between 1955 and 1959.
Paulo Renato Souza
Donated to the Fundação FHC in 2014, the Paulo Renato Souza Archive (1945-2011) reflects his professional career. It was given priority technical treatment in the group relating to his experience at the Ministry of Education.
