Crisis
and Renewal of Democracy

For Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s generation, democracy was the defining cause. There was once hope that democracy had been firmly established in Brazil and was advancing worldwide—a hope that proved mistaken. Today, understanding how democracies falter, withstand new authoritarian threats, and adapt to major contemporary challenges—from climate emergencies to the rise of Artificial Intelligence—is essential.

Brazilian democracy has weathered significant challenges in recent years. But can we deepen it with more robust governance, more consistent state policies, and reduced divisive polarization? Will we succeed in eradicating poverty and reducing inequalities to build a truly democratic, fair, and sustainable nation?

Through debates, publications, and videos, the Fundação FHC seeks to foster democratic dialogue and contribute to addressing the democratic crisis—an issue that extends far beyond Brazil’s borders—and to promoting its consolidation. Some of this content is gathered on this page.
