Hearts and Minds Volume 4 — Educating in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The fourth volume in a free collection aimed at educators is dedicated to promoting civic values and encouraging the experience of democracy in the classroom.
In light of the increasingly important role of artificial intelligence in learning and social interaction in schools, what attitudes and strategies should teachers adopt? This publication by Plataforma Democrática invites teachers to reflect on this and other issues affecting everyday school life. It contains activities that can be adapted to different levels of education.
The book is written in straightforward and accessible language and has two parts. The first, written by the sociologist Bernardo Sorj, provides an overview of the ‘adventure of humanity’. In it, Sorj highlights the key social, political and technological changes that have occurred throughout human history, from hunter-gatherer tribes to the modern, post-industrial era.
Against this backdrop, Sorj discusses the characteristics and challenges of the current historical moment. In light of the risks posed by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, Sorj argues for the reinforcement of humanistic and democratic values, as well as the cultivation of creativity and critical thinking, to ensure the optimal utilisation of this new technology.
The second part, developed by Alice Noujaim, Maura Marzocchi and Renata Capovilla, includes an activity book to help teachers address the issues raised in the first part of the book in the classroom.
